CHAPTER EIGHT
My stomach dropped as I watched the horde of undead wildlife rush me. By now, they were close enough for me to hear the faint whispers of magic that rolled off of them just as thickly as the stench of rot. Though the words were too faint to hear clearly, a snippet or two made it to me. Death. Pursuit. Destroy. Destroy. All of the things that no one wants to hear in a lonely, half-dark corner of Faerie.
Wait a minute, I thought as I looked down at the pistol in my hand. How in the Hell was I able to hear the background magic of Faerie when I still had a heavy chunk of iron in my grasp? For that matter, why hadnât the undead serpent that Iâd attacked with iron just a few moments before been able to withstand a beating with iron? Anything born of Faerie, save for goblins, orcs, half bloods like myself, should have rotted, or even burned, at the slightest touch of iron. The magic fueling these undead beasts should have been doubly affected, but for some reason were still going strong.
I didnât have an answer, and didnât have time to puzzle it out. What I did have, however, was a decent reminder that bullets and brawn werenât the only weapons I had at my disposal. While Iâd been too shocked to think of using magic against the fae whoâd attacked my mother earlier, a flicker of blue-greenish movement in the sky above reminded me that I still had a bit of magic at my beck and call. I didnât know why the strength of my magic had been all over the map recently. But if I wanted the best shot of making my spell work as intended, Iâd need to ditch the iron.
The nearest undead creature, a giant mass of meat that may have once been a bear, was less than my armâs length away when I dropped the pistol and started racing through the lines of fae poetry that could wrap my hands in arcs of electricity. The chances were that it wouldnât be enough to take down even one of the monsters charging for me, but it was better than nothing.
I could feel the pressure of the spell building up in my chest and finished the incantation just as the rotting thing was about to slam into me. There was a camera flashâs worth of light, and a tingle of static shock in my hands, as the spell discharged with a few blue sparks and thin threads of electricity at the tips of my outstretched fingers. It was a small thing, maybe even my worst display of magic in many months of practice on my part.
Then, nothing.
In other words, I was fucked. Absolutely fucked.
The thing that had once been a bear had reached me and was rearing back on its legs to crush me down from above. It almost made it, before a brilliant stab of lightning burrowed into it.
